Explanation of the design, ca. 1700.

Prepared for a Mr. Hedworth and signed "J. Vanbrugh," this document was intended to accompany drawings of a country house which is not known to have been built. The disposition of rooms is given and alternative suggestions made. Vanbrugh defends generously-sized "corridores or passages," and recommends unusually large public rooms and unusually small private ones. The house would have had three floors above a partially subterranean ground floor surrounded by a fosse; a portico was optional.
